Orthodontics(Preceptorship)
Program Overview
The Orthodontic Preceptorship Program provides advanced training in clinical orthodontics with emphasis on digital workflows, biomechanics, skeletal anchorage, craniofacial deformity management, multidisciplinary treatment, and evidence-based practice. The program offers opportunities to strengthen clinical expertise while fostering academic development and potential research engagement.
- Target Participants : Faculty members, attending orthodontists, orthodontic specialists, and senior residents
- Duration : 3-12 months (flexible)
Curriculum Components
Evidence-Based Orthodontic Practice
- Understanding levels of evidence in orthodontics
- Interpreting systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials (RCTs)
- Applying evidence in clinical decision-making
- Developing standardized guidelines and treatment protocols
- Evidence-based diagnosis and treatment planning
Biomechanics in Orthodontics
- Principles of force systems : moment, couple, center of resistance
- Types of tooth movement : tipping, bodily movement, intrusion, extrusion
- Application of biomechanics in fixed appliances and aligner systems
- Problem-solving through biomechanical analysis
Management of Craniofacial Deformities
- Multidisciplinary Team Care : collaboration with maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, prosthodontics, and pediatrics
- Current Orthopedic Approaches : Class III skeletal correction (especially cleft/craniofacial patients), bone-anchored orthopedic treatment including placement and loading of miniplates in infrazygomatic and mandibular areas, troubleshooting
- Surgical-Orthodontic Planning : virtual simulation and treatment sequencing for complex skeletal discrepancies, and surgery first approaches
- Long-term Follow-up : stability assessment, relapse prevention
- Case-Based Discussions : MARPE, BAMP, distraction osteogenesis in Class III and Class II correction, syndromic craniofacial deformities
Digital Orthodontics & Aligner Therapy
- Digital setup and staging for aligners
- Treatment planning software : ClinCheck, 3Shape Ortho Analyzer, etc.
- Application of 3D printing: in-house aligner production and custom appliance fabrication
- Digital planning for miniscrew insertion using CAD-CAM surgical guides
Orthodontic Applications of Miniscrews
- Fundamentals of Bone Biology : anatomy, bone density considerations, and remodeling dynamics
- Clinical Applications : anterior teeth retraction, posterior teeth protraction, molar intrusion, molar uprighting, total arch intrusion and distalization, management of complex cases
- Surgical Protocols & Safety : optimal insertion sites, angulation, and depth control to minimize risk to anatomical structures
- Periodontal Considerations : soft tissue management, peri-implant health maintenance, and prevention of inflammation
- Troubleshooting & Complication Management: addressing mobility, infection, or improper force application
- Post-Removal Healing : monitoring osseous and soft tissue recovery
Clinical Use of MARPE
- Indications, appliance types, and patient selection
- Activation protocols, suture opening and expansion monitoring
- CBCT-based evaluation of skeletal expansion
- Clinical workflow, troubleshooting, and complication management
OSA Collaboration
- Role of skeletal expansion in improving airway function
- Screening and identification of OSA candidates within orthodontic patients
- Multidisciplinary collaboration with sleep physicians, ENT, and pulmonologists
- CBCT airway volume analysis and longitudinal symptom tracking
